

The nature and history are the main axs to bring together the many attractions of the small but very interesting department of Granada, where there is an extinct volcano, long coastlines of Lake Cocibolca or Lake Nicaragua, archipelagos and the oldest city in the country, which retains its wide colonial historical center.
The city of Granada is one of the largest tourist attraction in Nicaragua, and one of the most visited places by foreign tourists at present. The colonial architecture of its old center, its museums, galleries, hotels, restaurants, bars and a cosmopolitan atmosphere makes it a destination in itself, but it is also a starting point to visit the other attractions in the region.
In the department of Granada is the Mombacho Volcano, which has an exotic cloud forest. Are the extensive shores of great lake, where you can take a bath or sports and aquatic activities. There is located the interesting and very accessible archipelago of islets, composed of more than 300 small islands. Lake inside is the enigmatic Zapatera Archipelago, which saved part of their forests and an archaeological treasure pre-columbian little studied.
Granada has a departmental extension of 1,039.68 km², and its population is divided almost similar between the urban and rural areas (65.2 % urban). It is only about 4 municipalities, which makes it the national department with less municipal units of Nicaragua.
